Grant has been medically cleared and is already participating in full team drills after missing 15 games last season with a serious ankle injury. "I thought Ryan looked very well," observed coach Mike McCarthy. "He had a couple of runs that came out of there. He looked like his old self." Clearly ahead of James Starks, we're warming to the idea of Grant as a rock-solid RB2.

A heavier James Starks is running with the twos. The Journal-Sentinel expects the Packers to ride the "hot hand," but there's little reason to believe it won't be Grant when he's healthy and already locked in as the starter in one of football's most explosive offenses. Starks is shaping up as more of a handcuff pick for Grant, who would offer terrific value as an RB3.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Grant is coming off a torn ligament in his ankle and a fracture near his knee, so it's fair to wonder if he can return to form. "I swear ... I don't think he looks any different," Philbin said. "He looks like Ryan to me." As long as Grant stays healthy, we're expecting him to hold off James Starks and play the feature back role on early downs.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>It's a surprising take, but comes from one of the best writers around. Grant is owed $3.5 million in base salary and Silverstein says James Starks, Alex Green and John Kuhn are certainties at running back. That leaves Grant and Dimitri Nance, who is scheduled to earn $525,000, battling for one spot. Still, Grant has been the clear first-team tailback throughout camp and has looked healthy by all accounts. We'd be surprised if he wasn't the starter on Sept. 8.

Grant's surgically repaired ankle is no longer an issue, but he's had just a so-so camp, "not bad, not great." Starks, meanwhile, is running with "more decisiveness and more power" along with improved patience and burst. This backfield has plenty of fantasy potential in a high-scoring offense, but the Grant-Starks duo threatens to be a "hot hand" situation all season long.

The Packers used Grant on their first, third, and fourth possessions of the first half, while James Starks (1-2, 5-38) handled the second and fifth. Starks had more explosive plays, including a 15-yard gain out of the backfield, but this remains a rotational backfield until proven otherwise. We'd prefer drafting Starks in the eighth or ninth round over Grant in the fifth or sixth.
